THE TRADITIONAL GRAVES

These graves which are commonly known as liang are different from those in other areas. According to the aluk todolo teaching all people, who have lived together in one family house, should also be buried together in their family grave when they die.
Liang erong, liang patane dan liang Pa'


Four Kinds Grave 

In accordance with the local condition and their cultural development there are kinds of grave in Toraja :

a. Liang Gua Erong
The body is placed in a wooden coffin which is aferwards placed in a cave. Example in Ke'te' Kesu

b. Liang Pa' During 
Liang Pa'During the 17th century Torajanese began to make large stone graves in rock faces. Since the bodies which have already been wrapped in many placed in these man-made graves without coffins together with other deceased members of the family. Then the door the grave is tightly closed.  Example in Lemo, Lo'ko'mata  

c. Liang Patane 
In the areas where there are no cliffs, grave are dug in the earth and small Torajanese house made of strong woods built on top them. Each grave is used for all members of the family, and the bodies wrapped in clothes are palced in it without coffins. Example in Ke'te Kesu

d. Since the coming of Cristianity and Islam to the area, many people bury their dead bodies in the earth. Some noblemen, however, still have Liang Pa' or Liang Patane Graves.
