THE HISTORICAL BACKGROUND TORAJA

The Toraja area used to be called Tondok Lepongan Bulan or Tana Matarik Allo, twi names which mean a country of one religion and cultural as round in form and its entirety as that of full moon (bulan) and sun (allo)

In the 15th century this country started to make contact with neighbouring kingdoms-Luwu, Sinderendeng and Bone. The name was then gradually change into Tana Toraja which implies :

a. Northrn and upper people. They were regarded such by the people of Sinderendeng because Tana Toraja was to the north of their country

b. Western people. The name derived from Bugis words of Luwu dialect to and rajang. They were called that way because their country was to the west of Luwu.
